The overall research consensus is that pantoprazole provides effective and durable gastric acid suppression, leading to high rates of healing in erosive esophagitis and substantial improvement in GERD symptoms and patient‑reported quality of life in otherwise healthy subjects. Comparative studies indicate that pantoprazole is at least as effective as other proton pump inhibitors and generally more effective than histamine‑2 receptor antagonists for both acute treatment and maintenance therapy of GERD.
