In healthy people, statins are not generally used as a routine supplement; they are medical therapies primarily prescribed for cardiovascular risk reduction rather than general wellness. Atorvastatin and rosuvastatin are among the more potent options, while simvastatin is often used at lower to moderate intensity. Their general health applications are centered on cholesterol lowering, prevention of heart attack and stroke in appropriate patients, and sometimes reduction of inflammation markers; however, these are medication effects rather than benefits for otherwise healthy adults seeking supplementation.

Human evidence shows that statins reliably lower LDL cholesterol and reduce cardiovascular risk, with rosuvastatin, atorvastatin, and simvastatin all having strong clinical evidence for lipid lowering. Comparative trials and meta-analyses suggest broadly similar efficacy across the class at appropriately matched doses, while tolerability differs somewhat by agent and dose. In head-to-head analyses, simvastatin and pravastatin tend to be better tolerated than atorvastatin, and rosuvastatin is often more potent for LDL lowering than atorvastatin or simvastatin. In healthy human subjects, adverse effects are generally uncommon but can include muscle symptoms and liver enzyme elevations, with higher doses increasing risk. Some large human studies also report a small increased risk of new-onset diabetes with certain statins, particularly rosuvastatin relative to atorvastatin in some populations. Overall, the research consensus is that statins are effective and generally safe when medically indicated, but they are not a general-purpose supplement.
