Research summary
The scientific evidence base for ticagrelor comes from large randomized controlled trials and real-world outcome studies in patients with acute coronary syndromes, myocardial infarction, stroke, and high-risk coronary artery disease. These trials consistently show that ticagrelor, usually in combination with low-dose aspirin, reduces rates of major adverse cardiovascular events and cardiovascular mortality compared with older antiplatelet agents such as clopidogrel, albeit at the cost of increased non-fatal bleeding. In addition, mechanistic human studies have demonstrated rapid and potent inhibition of platelet aggregation, as well as evidence of reduced inflammatory cytokine responses in controlled inflammatory challenges. In healthy human volunteers, ticagrelor has been studied mainly to characterize pharmacodynamics, safety, and effects on inflammatory markers, not as a general health-enhancing intervention. These studies show that ticagrelor effectively suppresses platelet function and can attenuate systemic inflammatory cytokine responses to experimental endotoxin exposure, but they also confirm a predictable increase in bleeding risk and other side effects such as dyspnea. Overall, research consensus is that ticagrelor is an effective secondary-prevention cardiovascular drug, not a wellness supplement, and its riskβbenefit profile is only favorable in people with substantial cardiovascular risk or established disease.
